How to Sing & Ways to Become a Better Singer
Aside from its many health benefits, singing is one of the few activities people of any age and physical ability can excel at. Whether you’re a regular karaoke queen or wouldn’t dare to sing in front of a crowd, you can learn how to get better at singing with practice, and we’ve got some great tips for how to get better at singing that you can try anywhere, anytime.
7 Tips for How to Get Better at Singing
-
Assess Your Posture
One of the easiest ways to improve your singing voice is to assess your posture. When you’re singing, are you slouched over, or are you sitting or standing up nice and tall? You should be standing with a tall posture, with your chin facing forward, not pointing up or down.
-
Relax!
Learning how to sing better can come with some frustration, but if there is one thing any vocal coach will tell you, it’s to relax not only your body, but your throat and tongue as well. Practice releasing tension in your body with some yoga or deep stretches. Then, with a tall posture and chin facing forward, sing part of a song while watching yourself in the mirror, paying special attention to if there is any tension in your face.
To check the tension in your throat, simply place your thumb and forefinger around your voice box and sing that phrase again. If it feels tight or rises as you sing, try to sing it again, fingers still in place, while actively relaxing the voice box. You can do this same exercise to check your tongue, by placing a thumb under your chin, singing a phrase, and checking for tightness.
Your jaw should also be relaxed, and can make a huge impact on the way you sound when you’re singing. Your jaw should move freely with the vowels you’re singing.
-
Sing from the Diaphragm
Learning how to become a singer comes with breath work and knowing where to breath from. Rather than taking your breath from the shoulders or chest, try inhaling from your diaphragm. Ramsey Voice has demonstrated an easy way to practice breathing from your diaphragm with these few steps:
- Stand in front of a mirror showing your entire torso.
- Place your hands on both sides of your stomach.
- Open your mouth and inhale, allowing your breath to expand your stomach outward.
- Exhale, allowing the breath to bring your stomach back in. If done correctly, this exercise can feel a bit weird, and your shoulders and chest should not move.
-
Control Your Breath
Controlling your breath is crucial when learning how to sing better, and one of the best breathing exercises to increase your breath control is the Farinelli Breathing Exercise. This breathing exercise can be done anywhere and can quickly help you expand your breath control.
-
Warm Up Your Voice
You wouldn’t do a workout without warming up your muscles, so why try to sing without warming up your voice? Not only will warming up your voice prevent injury to your vocal cords and muscles, it will help you learn how to get better at singing as well. There are several techniques you can use to warm up your voice, including:
- Humming
- Yawning & Sighing
- Straw Vocalizing
- Tongue Trills
- Sirens & Slides
- Two-Octave Pitch Glides
